Tandem Info on the Web

As with pretty much any subject, there’s a lot of information on tandem cycling out on the web. We thought it would be good to share some of our favorite sources.

Sheldon Brown’s website has always been a great source for cycling information and it has a whole section dedicated to tandems. There is a lot of information there (some a bit dated), along with a great sense of humor, so it makes for good, easy reading. For a good laugh, check out their RideWithoutGPS product.

The Tandem Forum on BikeForums.net is a very active community of tandem cyclists and you can get pretty much any question you have answered. If you are looking for some info, generic or very specific, a search through their archives often turns up an answer. If you can’t find it, just create a new thread and ask. You may, however, get more answers than you want! We subscribe to and read the tandem forum regularly and find this to be the best way to learn and absorb tandem info and keep up with what’s going on in the tandem community at large. For those of us who have been around for a while, the tandem@hobbes email list server used to be the place to go to ask tandem questions, but BikeForums.net seems to have mostly replaced it. Tandem@hobbes has moved to be a Google Group now. To join it, you will need a Google account. Click here, then click the “Ask to join group” button.

For a general list of every tandem resource they could find, check out the Tandem Club of America’s Resources page.  It has links to clubs, retailers, builders, tour operators (including us!) and a bunch more.

If you use Facebook, there are a number of groups centered around tandem cycling. The Tandem Bicycle page has 3500 members and Tandem Bicycling USA has 2000 members. If you are an off-road tandemist, Tandem Mountain and Gravel Bikes (1700 members), Tandem Off Road Bicycles (over 300 members) and S.O.O.R.T.A. (Self Organized Off Road Tandem Adventure) (over 450 members) are a few groups that you might be interested in.

If you are looking to buy or sell a used tandem, eBay and Craigslist are always good, but the Tandem Classifieds website may be the best place. They do not take a commission and have some good measures to make sure the seller is real and not a scammer.
