Trip Summary6 Days / 5 Nights |
Rich in history and with beautiful, rolling hills, Colonial Williamsburg and the lower peninsula is the perfect destination. Combine it with a tandem bike rally and it really doesn’t get any better than that!
Our Colonial Williamsburg, VA trip take place from Sunday, June 4 – Friday, June 9. You can combine this with the MATES Tandem Rally which will be held in Culpeper, VA from June 9 to 11, 2017.
On Day 1 we will meet at the Historic Powhatan Resort. After a quick orientation/check-in, we will offer a ride in the beautiful countryside north of Williamsburg. The longer ride will take the new Virginia Capital Trail to the Sherwood Forest Plantation, home of our 10th president, John Tyler. After the ride, we will check into our rooms and have a group dinner near the resort.
After breakfast on Day 2, we will head of for a ride to the Jamestown Settlement. The Jamestown Settlement is a living history museum located near the site of Jamestown, the first successful English settlement on the mainland of North America, founded on May 14, 1607. We offer rides of varying lengths and will meet for a picnic lunch in Jamestown. You can then explore the Settlement and actual Jamestown site in the afternoon. We will end the day at our hotel, Wedmore Place at the Williamsburg Winery, where we will have a group dinner.
On Day 3 we will ride to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry to rural Surry County. We will visit Chippokes Plantation State Park where we will enjoy a picnic lunch and a guided tour of the historic plantation buildings, gardens and archeological site. Maybe we will spot a bald eagle! After exploring the park, we will head back with a stop at Bacon’s Castle, the oldest brick dwelling in the United States. We will end the day with a tour, wine tasting and dinner at the Williamsburg Winery and Café Provençal.
On Day 4 we leave Wedmore Place and head over to Colonial Williamsburg, riding through the lovely campus of the College of William and Mary along the way. We will stop over at the Alewerks Brewing Company for a brewery tour, tasting and lunch (not necessarily in that order!). We will return to Colonial Williamsburg where you can walk around the town. Dinner is on your own. We will be staying at the Williamsburg Lodge, which is within an easy walk to all of the attractions within Colonial Williamsburg.
You will have the morning of Day 5 to explore Colonial Williamsburg. In the afternoon you can ride the scenic Colonial Parkway to Yorktown, location of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. Tour the battlefields and the town. This will be our last night together, so we cannot think of a better way to celebrate our trip than a group dinner, followed by a Ghost Tour of Colonial Williamsburg.
On the last day, feel free to explore the area some more. Then head off back to the starting point where you can shower and continue your adventures.

What is the average mileage per day?
As there is a lot to see each day, average mileage will be in the 30-40 mile range. We can certainly add routes for those that would like to do more riding. We can also shorten some days if you want. This area is a perfect area to host a trip as there are great roads, but lots of attractions as well. And it’s not hilly…so very cool! Just let us know what you want to do.
Where will we be staying?
While this could change, here are the hotels that we plan to stay in.
