Trip Summary5 Days / 5 Nights August 3 – 8, 2025 Cost: $3,950, per team This does not include the cost of the Eastern Tandem Rally. |
The 2025 Eastern Tandem Rally will be held from August 8 – 10, 2025 in Devens, Massachusetts. We have volunteered to run the rally and are very excited!
In addition to the Rally, Adventures in Tandem will be offering a five night pre-tour from August 3 – 8. The tour will start in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, travel through Newburyport, Massachusetts and end in Nashua, New Hampshire, about 20 miles from the ETR start. From the end of the tour, you can either drive to ETR or – if you flew in and don’t have a car – you can ride to the Rally! So, you can enjoy this tour AND the Eastern Tandem Rally!
The riding is lovely and while relatively flat along the coast, there are hills on the tour. Particularly, the day from Newburyport to Nashua is a hilly 45 mile route. You should feel comfortable riding this as our SAG support is only in case of mechanical failure. We will ride in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
This tour will be a bit different than our usual tours. Since the tour is connected to the Rally, we did not want to limit the size to our usual ten teams. Rather, we will take up to 25 tandem teams! So if you have never been able to make it onto one of our tours since they fill up fast, you should be able to get into this tour. And if you are an AIT alumni, you may be able to connect with other teams that you have met on our tours in the past.
We look forward to hosting this mini-rally prior to the Eastern Tandem Rally!
Day 1
Sunday |
We will meet in the lovely city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Feel free to come in a day or two early to enjoy Portsmouth. We will be staying in the downtown area. We will offer a ride around Portsmouth and enjoy a group dinner |
Day 2
Monday |
We will spend a second day in Portsmouth and offer a ride north into Maine. Cycle the East Coast Greenway through the town of Kittery and other small towns up to Ogunquit, before heading inland. If you have brought your car, we will have you drive to Nashua to park your car and we will transport you back to Portsmouth. This way your car will be there at the end of the tour.
Dinner is on your own in Portsmouth.
|
Day 3
Tuesday |
We will head to the historic and funky town of Newburyport, MA. You can stop along the way and go on a whale watching excursion in Rye, NH. We will enjoy a group dinner. |
Day 4
Wednesday |
We will do a loop ride from Newburyport, riding along the shoreline and inland along some gorgeous, scenic roads. Or you can just hang around town. There are whale watching tours that leave right from Newburyport. Dinner is on your own in any of the great restaurants that are walking distance from the Inn. |
Day 5
Thursday |
Today we will head to Nashua, NH, where we will spend our last night at the Sheraton Tara in Nashua. We will enjoy a group dinner. |
Day 6
Friday |
Our tour ends after breakfast. If you have traveled to the tour without driving, you can ride roughly 20 miles along the Nashua River Rail Trail to the Eastern Tandem Rally in Devens, Massachusetts. We will transport your bike cases and luggage. |
We are working on the routes and will have more details and pictures before the tour opens.

- Five nights lodging (see the hotels below)
- Five breakfasts
- Three dinners
- Routes
- Luggage transport
- Bike case storage
- Transport to Nashua to drop off your car where the tour ends
- If you do not have a car, we will transport your luggage and bike cases to the ETR in Devens.
Note that we do not provide any bicycles. We expect that you have a tandem that is in good working order and that you are able to assemble your bike. If you do not have your own tandem, you can rent a coupled tandem from Mel at Tandems East. If you have a tandem that is not coupled and you are not driving to the start, you may want to ship your tandem to Portsmouth before the tour. BikeFlights or Ship Bikes are possible options.
What is not included?
- Transportation to Portsmouth, NH (start point) or from Nashua, NH (end point). If you drove, we will make sure that your get your car to Nashua where the tour ends. If you don’t have a car, we will transport your luggage from Nashua to Devens. We will also store your bike cases and get them to Devens for you.
- Meals, other than those mentioned above
- Alcoholic beverages
- Eastern Tandem Rally registration and hotels. You will need to register for ETR and make the hotel reservation there separately when the rally registration opens. Detailed info about that will be available on the ETR site. The rally has a very high maximum on the number of participants, so there is no worry about it filling up before you can register.
What is the average mileage per day?
Average mileage is in the 20 to 50 mile range. We believe that there is enough to see so that more miles may prevent you from fully enjoying the attractions of the area. That said, we can work with you if you would like to ride more miles. Bear in mind, though, that we will not be providing SAG support, except in an emergency, if you are off the main route.
Where will we be staying?
While this could change, here are the inns that we plan to stay in. We stay at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel for two nights, the Essex Street Inn & Suites for two nights and the Sheraton Nashua for one night.
How do we sign up?
While the tour is now open, note that ETR will likely open up registration in January 2025. If you are interested please click on the I’m Interested button so that you will get first notice when the tour opens.
