May 17 – 24, 2024

Adventures in Tandem is at it again! We’re running a tour in Tuscany in May, 2024.

This tour will be a bit different from most of our other tours. We will stay in one place for the whole time. We are renting, Le Versegge, a small resort, in the province of Grosseto. Expect temperature highs in the mid-70’s and lows in the high 50’s.

Note that Tuscany is hilly. We will be in an area of Tuscany where the hills are not quite as bad as some other areas, but it’s still hilly. Since we are not changing hotels, you do not need to ride each day.

We will offer a variety of loop rides from the Resort. We do not expect to have an itinerary as planned as we typically do on our tours. So you can be on your own a bit more. We will not provide SAG support since we will be riding.

We will have dinner most nights in a fine restaurant adjacent to the resort. Each dinner is a three course meal, with appetizers, main course and dessert. We will include six dinners with one night on your own. We will review the menu for the week with the group before the trip. The chef can make special meals for those with dietary restrictions or preferences.

Note that this tour is limited to just twelve tandem couples. Also we have four deluxe rooms. Two of these are apartments that can sleep four — so families are welcome. If you are a family, please contact us for tour pricing.

The following is a draft itinerary:

Day 1 Friday

Meet at the Resort around 4PM. Assemble bikes and go for a nine mile test ride. Dinner at the Resort.

Day 2 Saturday – 48 miles/2400 feet elevation or 62 miles/4000 ft
We will offer a morning ride to the town of Massa Marittima. Listen to the church bells ring the noon hour. Visit the Medieval Cathedral and Duomo. Check out the 14th century Affresco delle Fonti dell’Abondonza as well as the cathedral. We will have plenty of time to wander the shops in the town and can have a lunch along the square. Then ride back to the resort where you can relax by the pool. Dinner at the Resort.
Day 3 Sunday – 32 miles / 800 feet elevation or 39 miles/1200 ft
Today we will take a trip to see Etruscan ruins in the town of Roselle. You could really spend some time at the archeological site. If we can line up a guided tour, we will. Lunch is on your own. Dinner at the Resort.
Day 4 Monday – 30 miles / 900 feet or 35 miles / 1700 feet or 47 miles / 2300 feet elevation
Riding west, we will ride to the hilltop town of Vetulonia. While it’s a climb, the views are spectacular. If that is not enough climb for you, we will have longer options. We will also tour and visit Le Mortelle winery where we will enjoy lunch overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. Dinner at the Resort.
Day 5 Tuesday – Grosseto – 37 miles / 800 feet or 54 miles / 1200 feet elevation

We offer two rides today, both taking you to the small city of Grosseto. Alternatively, you could take the day off of riding and, if you have a car, you can take a ferry to the island of Elba (the ferry is a 40 minute drive from the Villa) or drive to the Parco Natural della Maremma, a nature park with nice hiking trails that is about a half hour drive away. Or you could hang out by the pool at the Villa. The more adventurous folk could take a drive to Siena or other attractions within an hour or two away. Given the open nature of the day, you will be on your own for dinner.

Day 6 Wednesday – 32 miles / 1000 feet or  53 miles / 1500 feet or 62 miles / 3000 feet or 71 miles / 3500 feet of elevation

We will offer a variety of rides that take you along the coastline. Explore the town of Follonica and ride along the sea. Visit the ritzy town of Punta Ala with its moored yachts. Then, of course, it is back to the Resort to relax and have dinner.

Day 7 Thursday – 27 miles / 1100 feet elevation or 28 miles / 1500 ft or 29 miles / 2100 ft
We will offer scenic rides from the Villa in the Tuscan countryside. Visit Giuncarico and the Cantina Rocca de Frassinello winery. We will also tour the Frantoio San Luigi Di Sabatini olive oil farm. Back at the Villa we will disassemble bikes and enjoy one final group dinner.
Day 8 Friday

We say our goodbyes.

Here is what is included in the tour:

7 nights lodging.

7 breakfasts and 6 dinners, plus one group lunch

Admission to the Etruscan ruins in Roselle and the Le Mortelle wine tour.

Routes. Daily mileage will range from 30 to 60 miles.

What is not included:

Airfare. The closest airport is Rome, but there are generally cheaper fares if you fly into Milan. The Resort is about 1.5 hours from Rome and 6 hours from Milan.

Transportation to and from the Resort. The easiest way to get to the Resort is to rent a car. If you have a car, you will also be able to visit attractions that are too far to ride to. If you do not want to rent a car, you can take the train to Grosseto and either take a cab or perhaps we can pick you up, depending on timing.
